Like most countries, South Africa has its share of crime. Okay, perhaps more than its share. Chances are you will be affected
at some point. Whether your car is stolen, your purse swiped, or your house broken into, material possessions can easily come
and go.
On the positive side, the heinously violent crime that once characterized Johannesburg has decreased dramatically. Police are
cracking down, even installing 200 "crime watch" cameras over inner city hot spots.
That said, a rape occurs every six minutes in South Africa. Guns are widely available. Everyone knows someone who has been the
victim of armed robbery, assault, or car jacking. Many of these are crimes of opportunity. Flashy jewelry or a thin-strapped
shoulder bag can prove irresistible to some. To protect yourself and (to a lesser extent) your stuff:
1. Leave the expensive jewelry at home (out of sight and/or in a safe)
2. Carry only as much cash and credit cards as you need for a specific trip
3. Men, keep your wallet in your front or vest pocket
4. Women, carry your purse close to your body and keep it in your lap when seated
5. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly in parking garages and at ATMs
6. If you sense danger, move quickly to an open business or a populated area
7. Don't walk alone or in dark places at night
8. Keep all windows closed and doors locked, particularly at night
9. Use a home security system
If you are approached by a threatening individual, immediately surrender your valuables - they are worth far less than your
life.
