Driving in South Africa is an adventure, even if you're already comfortable driving on the left side of the road. You'll
encounter mind-numbing traffic, enormous potholes, and taxi drivers that can turn an ordinary minibus into a weapon of mass
destruction. South Africans routinely pass slower drivers, even when it doesn't seem to gain them any ground. Road rage is
fast becoming the national pastime.
That said, South Africa has one of the most well-developed networks of paved roads on the continent, and driving is the only
real way to see this beautiful country. There also aren't many other options, if you ever want to venture beyond your
immediate neighborhood.
The basics: If you're going to be around for more than a year, an International Drivers License can be helpful if get pulled
over, you're in an accident or want to rent a car. To get from point A to point B in one piece:
Road Rule #1: Always give taxis the right of way. If one slips in front of you, be ready to stop on a dime.
Road Rule #2: Everyone uses turn signals, but not to ask "May I merge?" That blinking light is telling you to "Look out,
pal, I'm about to cut you off."
Road Rule #3: No matter how fast you're going, you're not going fast enough to satisfy the guy driving behind you.
Protect yourself: Be aware that moving vehicles are attractive targets for criminals. Never leave valuables (especially purses
or bags) on the seat, as "smash and grab" thefts are rampant, particularly at busy intersections. Lock all packages and
purses in the trunk. Even keeping your windows down can invite intrusion, if only from the legions of hawkers selling trash
bags and plastic hangers at every corner.
Never drink and drive, because you'll need your wits about you to avoid all the other drunks on the road. Drive attentively
and defensively. And before you give a fellow driver the bird, keep in mind that he may keep a pistol in his glove
compartment.
When driving at night, you'll notice many people blow through traffic stops. That's one way locals try to avoid being
carjacked. It's also a good way to end up in the morgue. That said, if you’re at a red light and someone approaches you,
move on if the road is clear.
